The expectations aren’t set too high for an Oklahoma Sooners program that’s on the move. Finally making the move from the Big 12 to the SEC — a move that was announced in 2021 — the Sooners are heading to the most difficult college football conference the sport has to offer.
With the 2024 college football season still half a year away, sportsbooks have begun adding over/under win totals for the new season. Of course, with the Sooners making the move to a tougher conference, their win total is something intriguing to look at.
FanDuel is one of the most popular, well-known sportsbooks in America. With that, the win total lines they give programs are respectable, given their reputation in the sport. They set Oklahoma’s over/under win total at 7.5 games for their first season in the SEC.
At 7.5 wins, FanDuel projects the Sooners the be a mid-table program in their first season in the new tough conference. Programs like Georgia and Texas have their line set at 10.5 wins, with LSU, Alabama, Missouri and Ole Miss set at 9.5 wins. Tennessee and Texas A&M each have higher win totals set, with theirs being at 8.5 wins.
Again, finishing mid-table would not be a bad season for the Sooners, especially if they can finish the season with a winning record. In the 2022 football season, just two seasons ago, the Sooners finished the season 6-7 in the Big 12. In Brent Venables’ second year with the program, though, the Sooners went 10-3 as they exited the Big 12 just shy of making the conference title game.
Looking at the Sooners’ schedule for the 2024 season, they’ve got to play programs like Texas, Alabama, Ole Miss and Missouri, all ranked in the upper half of the AP Top 25 to finish the 2023 season. Their schedule does them no favors, and playing in the juggernaut of a conference for the first time leaves the Sooners with no real expectations.
