Patty Gasso’s Sooners are a perfect 9-0 as they navigate the early stages of the college softball season. They’re riding a 62-game winning streak that has seen the program win three-straight National Championships. Evidently, being average isn’t something the Sooners are or will be okay with, especially as they’re hunting a four-peat, and head coach Patty Gasso understands that.

“I thought this last weekend we were good enough to win,” Gasso said on Tuesday. “We were more average than above average or even exceptional and we got away with it.”

Again, the program is changing the sport that is college softball, and settling for average just won’t work. It’s no surprise that Gasso isn’t okay with where the team is at, especially as they’re 9-0 and haven’t seen any real costly hiccup this season. Over the weekend, the Sooners allowed just one run, but their hitting didn’t perform as well as it could have.

“Our defense was really good this [past] weekend,” Gasso continued. “I don’t think we made any errors. Pitching is on point, and the hitting is going to be catching up very quickly.”

As the Sooners continue to build on the early stages of the season, it’ll be no surprise that they’ll build good habits and fix any woes that they have. How do they plan to do that? Gasso says taking practice more seriously and demanding more will be the key.

“Our team, we had this discussion, that our goal is to amp up practice and demand better at practice because it’s showing in games and that is not what we want,” Gasso said. “The pressure is kind of on me to make sure that I am paying attention to these things, stopping, calling them out, do it over again, hustle, athletic movements, athletic hustle.”

Again, the Sooners are changing the sport and bringing a different level of attention to the people playing it. For them to set the standard and continue pushing forward comes as no surprise.
