Oklahoma’s SEC schedule is heating up, and its underdog status will be put on hold for a week.

On Saturday, Oklahoma will travel to Auburn for not only its first road game of 2024 but also its first SEC road game. Oklahoma opened as a 2.5-point favorite at Auburn, with the over/under set at 46.5 points.

The Sooners opened SEC play against Tennessee, taking their first loss of the season 25-15. This was the first of a long list of meetings against ranked opponents on the Sooners’ SEC schedule.

While they will likely be underdogs in most of their remaining schedule, barring a turnaround, the Sooners will get a chance to get back on track against another struggling team. Auburn is only 2-2 this season, with home losses against Cal and Arkansas.

Sooners in need of a bounce-back performance

Toward the end of Oklahoma’s loss to Tennessee, the offense finally appeared to show signs of life. In the second half, coach Brent Venables made a switch at quarterback, sitting Jackson Arnold for Michael Hawkins Jr.

With Hawkins under center, Oklahoma looked much more fluid offensively. The freshman quarterback completed 11 of 18 passes for 132 yards and two touchdowns. Meanwhile, Arnold could still battle for the starting spot, but his 54 yards and three turnovers while completing only 44% of his passes against Tennessee should put him on the bench moving forward.

While the Sooners had little to be proud of offensively, their defense still gave reason for optimism. The typical strong suit of a Venables team, the Sooners held a high-powered Tennessee offense to only 25 points and forced two turnovers.

Considering how poorly Hugh Freeze’s team has played in the first four games, Auburn will be looking to make a statement against Oklahoma. Meanwhile, the Sooners might dig too deep of a hole to get out if they can’t take care of business on the road.
