OU Football: Sooners Steep Underdogs to Texas Longhorns For 2024 Matchup

The Red River Rivalry is one of the most notable games on the college football schedule, as it has been for years. The matchup will only become more notable in the 2024 college football season, too. The two elite college football programs are on the move to the SEC, making the matchup mean that much more.

Last season, the Oklahoma Sooners defeated the Texas Longhorns 34-30 behind a game-winning drive led by quarterback Dillon Gabriel. It was no easy game for the Sooners, but they eventually came out on top in a game that saw them enter the lead in the Big 12.

As the two teams played their final season in the Big 12, the Longhorns defeated Oklahoma State to win the conference championship and earn a College Football Playoff bid. They’re going to take that same talent and expectation into the SEC, and that makes this matchup even more difficult for the Sooners, who are entering a new era.

While the college football season is far, far away, some early betting lines for some of the marquee matchups of the season have been released. One of those games, of course, was Red River Rivalry. The Longhorns are an early 10.5-point favorite over the Sooners, according to FanDuel.

Of course, these teams have proven nothing for this upcoming season, but the Longhorns are projected to be contenders in the SEC and are expected to be able to earn themselves another College Football Playoff bid, this time with the help of a 12-team playoff format.

For the Sooners, they’re expected to finish in the upper hand of mid-table. Eight wins would be considered a success for their first season in the new conference. Again, it’s a juggernaut of a conference, and the Sooners are still entering a new era. They just had their first 10-win season of the Brent Venables era, but it came in a much, much easier conference.

With the expectations being so different for the two programs, it’s no surprise the Longhorns are an early double-digit favorite over the Sooners. Still, the matchup has had plenty of memorable moments and upsets, so the Sooners and fans shouldn’t be too worked up over the betting line.
