The Oklahoma Sooners are one of the most intriguing teams to follow heading into the 2024 college football season. Sure, there is conference realignment across the sport, but it was kicked off by Oklahoma and Texas.
Analysts are predicting Texas to be close to the top of the SEC while projecting to be a playoff team. Where’s that leave Oklahoma? The seven- or eight-win range has been where the Sooners have been regarded.
Given their strength in schedule in year one of the SEC, Brent Venables’ squad has a huge chance to prove themselves. The Sooners head coach brought in a new offensive and defensive coordinator each, and the team should look different on both sides of the ball.
With Seth Littrell taking over the offense, the Sooners will be running an air raid offense as Jackson Arnold takes over under center. The team has an elite wide receiver corps, and the addition of transfer wide receiver Deion Burks plays a big role in that.
Oklahoma’s Deion Burks makes 2024 Preseason All-Transfer Portal Team
Burks quickly shined as a Sooners, though he’s yet to sport crimson and cream during a regular season game. He had a strong spring showing, both in practice and during the spring game. Catching deep balls from Arnold, the connection between the two seems strong.

The addition of the former Purdue wide receiver was quite significant to Oklahoma’s offense, and On3 acknowledges that, adding him to their 2024 Preseason All-Transfer Portal Team.
“Burks was one of the Sooners’ spring stars, quickly showcasing a strong chemistry with OU quarterback Jackson Arnold,” On3 wrote. “The ex-Purdue speedster had a breakout season as a sophomore, but Burks could be even more productive in his first year in the SEC if he plays with a little more consistency (too many feast-or-famine games in 2023).”
Oklahoma Sooners add veteran wide receiver play for Jackson Arnold
What exactly does Burks bring to the table? As On3 alluded to, he adds plenty of speed. Last season at Purdue, the redshirt sophomore caught 47 passes for 647 yards and seven touchdowns. Surrounded by even more talent and an elite arm in Arnold, those numbers are set to improve plenty.
Not only does Burks bring speed and talent, but he’s been playing college football for three seasons now. Having another wide receiver who’s been around for some time to surround Arnold in his first year as a starter could be important, and having Burks as an inside threat against SEC defenses will be key to Littrell’s offense being functional.
Expect Burks to increase his draft stock substantially, as he should go within the first few rounds of the 2025 NFL Draft, while also receiving some SEC honors next season.
