The world of college football is in the thick of the offseason. Coaches are hosting camps and getting incredibly active on the recruiting trail, making up for any lost time during spring football and the transfer portal opening. Brent Venables and the rest of the Sooners staff are engaged on the trail, looking to make big-time additions as Oklahoma prepares for life in the SEC.
On Wednesday, one of their players got into some trouble, though.
OU football player Makari Vickers arrested on Wednesday
Vickers was arrested on Wednesday by the OU Police Department, according to Sooners on SI.
“The Cleveland County Sheriff’s Office confirmed to Sooners on SI that Vickers had been arrested by the OU Police Department and booked into Cleveland County, but the Sheriff’s Office was unable to give any additional details,” Sooners on SI reported.
The OU Police Department has yet to make any comments on the arrest.
“We are aware of the matter and it is being addressed internally,” a spokesperson from OU’s athletic department told Sooners on SI.
Oklahoma’s Makari Vickers is a former four-star talent
Heading into his second season with the program, there is some promise around Vickers. The four-star defensive back from the 2023 recruiting class was the No. 8 safety in the nation and the No. 23-ranked player in Florida.
The 6-foot-1, 192-pound defensive back and former four-star product played in eight games during the team’s 2023 campaign, Vickers’ freshman season. He tallied eight tackles and one pass defended over his campaign, with the true freshman playing in some crucial moments for Venables.
Vickers got some playing time late in the second half in Bedlam in Stillwater, giving the true freshman a chance to shine in one of the team’s biggest games of the season.
Given his usage during his true freshman season, it’s hard to imagine Vickers won’t find himself a solid role heading into his second year with the program.
