The Oklahoma Sooners new era is here. Within a month, the program will officially be a member of the SEC. Head coach Brent Venables attended the conference’s spring meeting. The next time the Sooners take the field, there will be an SEC logo (and maybe some corporate logos, for that matter).
Evidently, the offseason is here in full force. Summer camps with high school prospects are underway. Recruiting is heating up. Venables is staying busy on the trail while bringing some of the top recruits to Norman to showcase their skills and pick up offers. Players are off doing their own offseason workouts and putting in work ahead of a defining 2024 college football campaign.
With this, offseason content follows. Quarterback rankings, recruiting rankings, breaking down transfer portal moves. Recently, ESPN ranked every quarterback in the FBS in a tier system.
ESPN ranks Oklahoma’s Jackson Arnold in tier 4 among FBS quarterbacks
ESPN’s tier rankings were unique. Every tier was accompanied by a brief example of the players that followed. Tier 4, which included Oklahoma Sooners quarterback Jackson Arnold, was headlined with “young and restless.”
“Bowl opt-outs stink, but if there’s a silver lining to last year’s postseason exodus, it was that we got a sneak peek at this group. [KSU’s Avery] Johnson, Arnold, [Tennessee’s Nico] Iamaleava and [USC’s Miller] Moss all got a start in their respective bowl games, and the performances offered ample reason for optimism. The trio combined for 83.7 Total QBR, 1,211 total yards, 15 touchdowns and 5 turnovers. And they all played against top-20 opponents,” ESPN wrote.
Arnold started against Arizona in the Alamo Bowl. The true freshman might have thrown three interceptions, but that comes with throwing 45 passes in his first start. He completed 26 of his passes for 361 passing yards and two touchdowns. He flashed every bit of his potential and proved to be a solid decision to take over starting under center heading into the SEC.
With the team’s transition, star quarterback play is a must. Arnold will fit the bill. He got his feet wet, and he’s equipped with an incredible wide receiver corps. The air raid offense will quickly help him settle in while showing off his elite arm talent. The Sooners are in a good position heading into the 2024 college football season.
