Questions and concerns regarding the Oklahoma Sooners’ transition from the Big 12 to the SEC feel like they can be squashed easily. They’re a blue blood program that will take a backseat to nobody. They dominated the Big 12 for as long as history goes and they’re sure to adapt to the new conference.

Now, the Sooners have been an elite program in history and are highly regarded. There’s not a blue blood ranking or list that doesn’t include Oklahoma.

As seven-time National Champions, Oklahoma is in pursuit of continuing to raise banners, and playing in the SEC will pose a big opportunity to do such moving forward. With improved competition and likely consistent appearances in the College Football Playoffs, Oklahoma will have to prove themselves in the conference before being regarded as national title contenders again.

On3’s Andy Staples took a look at college football blue bloods, a list that included the Sooners and a handful of other programs.

The question comes as programs like Oregon are now being considered as to whether or not they are a blue blood. Heading into the Big Ten in the midst of conference realignment, they’ll be able to prove whether or not they are a blue blood.

For the Sooners, that’s not in question as they head into the SEC. They were listed among nine blue bloods across the sport a list that includes Alabama, Georgia, Texas, USC, Notre Dame, Michigan, Ohio State, Penn State and, of course, Oklahoma.

The Sooners have been dominant for the majority of their history, though they haven’t won a title since 2000. However, they’ve been in contention most of the time since then.

“The mid-to-late 1990s are the only real down era for Oklahoma football. For the rest of the Sooners’ history, they’ve been excellent,” Staples wrote. They haven’t won a national title since the 2000 season, but they played for it after the 2003, 2004 and 2008 seasons and made the four-team College Football Playoff four times.”

Heading into a new era, it’s hard to ignore the program’s blue blood status. If and when they prove to be good enough to compete in the SEC, it won’t come as a shock as they’ve long been one of the best programs in the sport.
