The Sooners’ head man is here to stay.
On Saturday, Oklahoma baseball coach Skip Johnson reportedly reached an agreement with the Sooners to stay in Norman. After rumors were swirling about Johnson’s interest in the Texas A&M job, he confirmed his decision to stay in Norman via social media.
Although moving from the Big 12 to the SEC might have been enough to sway a coach like Johnson in recent years, OU’s move to the conference could have played a role in his decision. Going into a new conference with stability is an important factor, and the Sooners will be in a good position on that front.
Last season, Johnson helped the Sooners go 40-21, including 23-7 in the Big 12, to finish first in the regular-season standings. OU fell short of winning the Big 12 Tournament, losing to Oklahoma State in the championship.
OU continued to struggle in the postseason in 2024, losing in the Norman Regional final to Connecticut. However, Johnson has also led the Sooners to some impressive postseason heights.

In seven seasons as OU’s head coach, Johnson has gotten his team to the NCAA Tournament four times, including each of the past three seasons. In 2022, Johnson helped the Sooners make the College World Series, where they lost to Ole Miss in the championship series.
As the Sooners search for their first national championship since 1994, Johnson seems to be the best fit for the job. Although it will be a tough task to get his team back to Omaha, transitioning to the SEC will be much smoother for a veteran head coach.
With a 229-153 record with OU, Johnson’s numbers speak for themselves, and his results make him one of the most coveted coaches in the country. Considering he took his name out of the running for the Texas A&M job, Johnson’s tenure in Norman is set to continue for the foreseeable future.
