The Oklahoma Sooners have a rich history, with their most recent National Championship victory coming in 2000 against Florida State as they were the unanimous top team in the nation. They won the Orange Bowl 13-2, led by head coach Bob Stoops, to secure the program’s seventh national title.

The quarterback through the 2000 campaign happened to be Josh Heupel — head coach of Tennessee, now a foe of Oklahoma’s in the SEC. In the 2024 college football season, Heupel will return to Norman to take on the Sooners on their home field. His return will be highly touted.

“For my coaching career to playing career, a lot of great relationships, a lot of great memories,” Heupel said of Oklahoma. “So many people have been a huge part of helping me as a player grow as a man, helping me in this profession as well.”

Josh Heupel lands on 2025 College Football Hall of Fame Ballot

On Monday, it was announced by the National Football Foundation that the Tennessee coach and former Sooners National Championship-winning quarterback was on the 2025 College Football Hall of Fame Ballot.

Heupel tallied all of his stats and built his incredible college football career — which will see him inducted into the Hall of Fame during the 67th NFF Annual Awards Dinner in Las Vegas on Dec. 9, 2025 — over the course of two seasons in Norman. With 7,066 passing yards and 50 touchdowns, the quarterback is well deserving of a Hall of Fame selection.

Now, Heupel will be able to flex his offensive muscle in front of his former program. The former Sooners offensive coordinator has had the Volunteers’ offense looking solid in recent years, and he’ll be able to test the Sooners’ defense in Norman this season.

The former Sooner quarterback landing in the Hall of Fame is a further case study to the powerhouse Oklahoma has been with a long line of elite quarterbacks having played in Norman.
