Oklahoma Guard Javian McCollum Enters Transfer Portal

Porter Moser and the Oklahoma Sooners are going to have another roster rebuild over the offseason as outgoing transfers in the portal are running rampant. Things kicked off with Otega Oweh and John Hugley entering the portal, thinning out the depth at the guard and center positions. Milos Uzan then followed, adding even more issue in the backcourt.

Now, as has been reported by a variety of sources, star guard Javian McCollum has entered the transfer portal. McCollum was the bright spot of the Sooners’ 20-win season, being the teams best perimeter player and shooter. He averaged 13.3 points, 2.6 rebounds and 3.4 assists per game in his 30 contests played. He started every game he was active in, averaging 31.1 minutes per game.

Oklahoma in need of guard play

While having solid big men is still incredibly important in college basketball, the need for having solid guard play is becoming more and more prominent across the sport. Teams played into the second and third weekends of the NCAA Tournament show a trend of solid guards capable of shooting and passing the rock.

For Oklahoma, they lost Uzan, Oweh and, now, McCollum. With incoming freshman Dayton Forsythe set to help lift the position a bit, Moser still needs to find solid production at the position through the transfer portal.

Sooners set to see another roster reset

Losing seven players from this past season — three to graduation and four in the transfer portal — the Sooners are going to see another facelift for the roster. Of those who produced consistent minutes or impacts, only Jalon Moore and Sam Godwin are set to return.

Targets like Sean Pedulla (Virginia Tech) and Brandon Garrison (Oklahoma State) out of the transfer portal could be huge in Oklahoma replacing its talent, but another year of turnover will see Moser having to blend together another group of guys in pursuit of an NCAA Tournament appearance.
