Oklahoma football is a blue blood with a rich history. That is no secret. They’ve been dominant since the early days of college football.

In specific, the team was absolutely elite from 1946 to 1956, winning the conference title in each of those seasons and earning three national titles. In a sport riddled in tradition and embracing program history, the Sooners recently made a move to ensure they’re appreciating the past.

The era, which can be highlighted by Sooners legend Bud Wilkinson, will be represented by Oklahoma in Sept. 7 as the Sooners host Houston.

Wilkinson coached the Sooners from 1947 to 1963, and he hoisted some of the best teams that will ever be remembered in Norman. The three championships he brought to Norman were the first three in program history.

“Oklahoma’s 2024 alternate uniform is representative of the one worn by OU teams from 1946-56. The ensemble features crimson jerseys with white numerals, white tri-stripes on the shoulder sleeves and SEC and Jordan Brand patches. The uniform also includes crimson striping on the sides of the white pants and on the top of logo-free white helmet,” the Sooners wrote in a release.

In 2003, Oklahoma sported a “Sooner Legacy” jersey which the 2024 alternate jersey closely resembles. The alternate jersey comes at a good time, as the program is celebrating the 100th year of the Gaylord Family – Oklahoma Memorial Stadium. Of course, the Sooners’ contest against Houston is highlighting the Wilkinson era.

With Wilkinson having won three titles as Oklahoma’s head coach, Brent Venables and the rest of the program are looking to continue adding to the program’s history in search of an eighth national title. Oklahoma happens to be heading into its first season in the SEC, as a blue blood program is now playing in the toughest conference in college football.
