Joe Jon Finley is gearing up for his first season as a co-offensive coordinator for the Oklahoma Sooners. As the program makes the move to the SEC, he’s up for a big challenge against some stout defenses. Fortunately, he’s got some time to accrue more talent on that side of the football through the transfer portal.
With the transfer portal being closed for new entries, players are still committing to their new programs. The Sooners are reaping the benefit of this again as former North Texas and Baylor tight end Jake Roberts committed to OU on Monday.
This is the third tight end in the 2024 class for the Sooners, as they’re bringing in Bauer Sharp from the transfer portal and four-star recruit Davon Mitchell.
Roberts also happens to be the older brother of Nate Roberts, a four-star target of the Sooners. He played his high school football at Norman North before playing college football at North Texas, where he spent time being coached by Seth Littrell. Of course, he spent his last season playing for Baylor.
Roberts tallied 541 receiving yards on 43 receptions in three seasons at North Texas while he found the end zone on three occasions in that span. He then transferred to Baylor for his fourth year of college football, where he caught 23 passes for 231 receiving yards and a touchdown.
For the Sooners, the tight end room will look a bit revamped after injuries hindered the group throughout the 2023 football season. Adding the three new talents will allow for the Sooners offense to have a new look in that department.
Having Roberts come in and bring a veteran experience to the position group will be beneficial for a guy like Mitchell, who is joining the program a year early after reclassifying. It’s going to be interesting to see how the new-look offense will bode in the SEC, especially as the program is now being led by quarterback Jackson Arnold.
