In recent history, the Oklahoma Sooners have seen plenty of talent pass through at the quarterback position. Baker Mayfield, Kyler Murray and Jalen Hurts are three NFL players to play under center consecutively. That stretch of three quarterbacks was then followed up by Spencer Rattler and Caleb Williams.
The Rattler and Williams era didn’t pan out too well. Rattler never fulfilled his potential before losing his starting job to Williams, which then led to his transfer to South Carolina. Williams was incredible during the 2021 season before eventually transferring to USC after Lincoln Riley, his head coach at OU, took the job to lead the Trojans.
Now, Williams is the next Sooner product to make the NFL, as he announced on his social media on Monday.
As mentioned, Williams spent one season at Oklahoma. Still, he claimed the program in his announcement that he would be heading to the draft.
“Since I was 10, all I ever wanted to do was to play football. The journey would be empty without the people who have supported and loved me. I will Fight On forever and rep Hornsdown4Life. I’m ready to do whatever it takes. I am officially declaring for the NFL Draft,” Williams wrote.
Williams played in 11 games during his lone season in Norman. He posted 1,912 passing yards, 21 passing touchdowns and four interceptions in those game, having a breakout season after starting out as the backup quarterback. He also rushed the ball 79 times for 442 rushing yards and ten additional touchdowns.
After two seasons at USC — playing under Riley — Williams finished his three-year college football career with 10,082 passing yards and 93 passing touchdowns with just 14 interceptions. He completed 66.9 percent of his passes over the course of his career, too.
Something that makes Williams so special is his dual-threat ability. He added 979 rushing yards in his career, scoring 27 touchdowns on the ground. He’s expected to be the No. 1 pick in the draft, though the Chicago Bears currently hoist the pick, and will be the first quarterback to be selected.
