The Oklahoma Sooners are set to take another leap. It might not show in the win/loss column, no thanks to the program’s move to the SEC from the Big 12. Talent is going to be tougher, but as Brent Venables enters his third season as the head coach of the Sooners, the team’s on-field product and ability to compete with high-level programs should improve.

Depending on the level of play the Sooners receive from sophomore quarterback Jackson Arnold, the Sooners’ offense could be close to elite. The offensive line will be sneaky good, and Oklahoma arguably has the best wide receiver corps across the SEC. Their schedule is a gauntlet, and there might be an adjustment period, but the offense could be an entertaining watch.

CBS Sports was recently among those who shared praise for Jackson Arnold as he is set to improve and take over for Oklahoma heading into the 2024 college football season.

Having moved on from Dillon Gabriel, who now plays for Oregon, Arnold has been the starting quarterback in waiting for the past season. It was known he was taking over after the 2023 season, and no better time than when the team moves to the toughest league in college football.

CBS Sports took a look at second-year quarterbacks, ranking them while providing tiers of expectations. Arnold was ranked No. 2, coming in just behind Tennessee quarterback Nico Iamaleava.

Oklahoma’s Jackson Arnold throws a pass during the University of Oklahoma (OU) spring football practice at the Everest Training Center in Norman, Okla., Wednesday, March 27, 2024.

“Arnold started in the bowl game for Oklahoma against Arizona and there were definitely growing pains and freshman lumps, but there were also some magnificent plays where the Texas native displayed wonderful footwork, escapability and an explosive arm,” CBS Sports wrote. “Arnold was a five-star in the 2023 class and his ability pushed out starting quarterback Dillon Gabriel (one of college football’s most prolific passers) to Oregon. We really like the weapons at receiver for Arnold with Deion Burks, Andrel Anthony and Nic Anderson.”

To the point of Arnold’s elite arm talent, it’s been on full display since he hit college football. He had a strong spring showing after plenty of flashes in the bowl game. With Seth Littrell, the Sooners new offensive coordinator, taking over this season, the air raid attack will allow Arnold to shine at the highest level.
